Melchester City

Anyone remember them?I think one of the monthlys made them up I think they were based on Birmingham City as they had a chairman who dealt in newspapers and a woman as Managing Director.

Re: Melchester City

I certainly do remember them. As Blackie Gray points out elsewhere, Melchester City were one of the many new teams introduced in the 1993-1995 monthlies. However, I do not know which team (if any) provided the inspiration for their creation.

Incidentally, as far as I can remember, Melchester Rovers were the only team that 'survived' from the old weekly comic, when the monthly started. The monthly chose a format in which all (or most of) the other Premier League teams appeared (to a certain extent) to be based on real-life teams, and many of their players also seemed to be based on real life players.

What did other readers think of this?

MW.

Re: Melchester City

I think the way the club operated with a woman as managing director and a chairman who was involved in the "dirty magazine" industry meant they were based on Birmingham City as Ben says, although they were only joining the League in 1994 so they couldn't be totally based on them.

Like many though, I had grown up with Melboro being Rovers traditional rival and this change seemed pointless. In the 93/95 period the teams were modelled very closely on those in real life as has been said, with the players (e.g. Andy Cole became Coke, Vinny Jones became Bones) all having slight name changes. I could see what they were trying to do in attempting to reach out to a new audience, but the sudden change in teams Rovers played was yet another thing that disappointed many original RotR fans about the monthly. I'm glad MotD brought the old teams back.

Indeed. Don't see the point really of using new made-up team names and if yes, they'd better've used the real teams. like:
Liverpool 0
Melchester Rovers 4

Re: Melchester City

But the storyline that was featured in Shoot with Melchester Rovers playing Melchester City - when Malandro made his FA cup debut and continued playing after being brutally hacked by a City player, was great. It was a cold miserable winter and City had their 3 crown jewels - Thomas, Rufer and Carmichael terrorising Rovers. I wonder what happened to the 3 crown jewels?

Do you think City were based around Barnet who joined the league about then. Didn't Stan Flashman or somebody become chairman and get them into the league. A similar story to City.
