Who's Who by Shirt Number - No. 4

Next up ...

SHIRT NO. 4

When Roy Race first broke into the first team in 1955 the Number 4 shirt was worn by HUGHIE GRIFFITHS, who was Rovers' regular right-half for several seasons ...

When Hughie retired at the start of the 1962/63 season he was replaced by new signing ALBERT 'BOMBER' REEVES, a former Royal Marine commando ...

When Bomber was forced to retire through injury early in the 1968/69 season he was replaced by young midfielder GEOFF GILES, who became an England international and was a mainstay of the team until transferring to Melboro at the start of the 1980/81 season ...

... after this my info is a bit sketchy. I know that Nat 'Grandad' Gosden arrived in January 1981 on a free transfer from Oldfield, but am not sure if was a regular. Can anyone provide any more info of players who regularly wore the Number 4 shirt and in what seasons?

It was Steve Naylor in the early 80's. Later it was Bruno Johnson and Terry Spring (I think it was Mark Gray some times, too).

Yeah, I remember Steve Naylor now. I think he took over from Nat 'Grandad' Gosden during the 1981/82 season.

I'm pretty sure Bruno Johnson was a regular in the Number 5 shirt though and I think Mark 'Cracker' Gray wore the Number 4 shirt during the 1986/87 season, after the Basran tragedy.

Comments, additions and corrections are welcome as always!

Des Chapman had it in the monthlies, think Bruckner was no. 4 before him, but he was 5 in the monthlies. Was it Anton Gronvold in MOTD?

Yes, it was. But from that period the first team wasn't numbered 1-11 any more as players had their own shirts (e.g. Declan 15, Dino Marcello 17).
