Ian Fraser

Hi there folks, looking for some help. As a youngster i can remember getting the weekly comic and opening it up one day to find out i had signed for Melchester Rovers.

Unfortunately, due to an accident i lost my collection.

I am looking for any information as to when it was that Ian Fraser first appeared in Roy of the Rovers as i want to pass onto my kid.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Im pretty sure it was between 1979 and 1983(sorry i cant narrow it down any further). I have started to question myself if it was actually Melchester now or if it was one of the other teams featured in the comic week in week out as i have searched on various sites listing all players and i cannot see any mention of it.

Re: Ian Fraser

Ian Fraser was one of the Apprentices. In the story The Apprentices (with Rob Richards) so somewhere around 1983.

He signed for Rovers youth from a Scottish club.

He played right back and was considered the cause of one of the Hayward brothers not having their contract extended at the end of the season.

Re: Ian Fraser

It was the issue dated 1st October 1983. Fraser was in the hospital bed next to Tim Hayward after the youth team's coach crash when he recognised Blackie visiting.

Played at full back for Dundonald Rangers in the Scottish Premier Division, but had to move south when his parents moved to England.

To be honest, I think I could have come up with something a bit more plausible than that, but it really fitted in with some of the storylines at the time, of people hopping in and out of wheelchairs to play professionally, or being forced to play in the first division under a false identity because their fathers had unknowingly signed a blank piece of paper for a bogus autograph hunter etc etc.

Obviously, and typically for parents of Rovers' targets, his father was dead against him playing ("We didn't move down from Scotland for you to kick a football around" - this despite the fact he'd already played at the top level in Scotland, but never mind) - but did an instant U-turn when he discovered Taffy (or "Monty") Morgan, who he'd served with in the army 30 years previously, was coach.

Anyway, hope that helps.
